Robot Framework

Robot Framework is a tool for acceptance testing and acceptance test driven development (ATDD). Learn how to master a popular test automation tool!

Robot Framework is an open-source tool, especially suited for acceptance testing and acceptance testing driven development (ATDD). Robot Framework is very popular in Finland and Robot Framework skills are an essential part of the test automation developer’s toolkit.

The development of the Robot Framework started in 2005 with Pekka Klärck’s diploma thesis. In the same year the first version was developed. Since its release, Robot Framework has steadily increased its popularity in Finland.

One of the strengths of the Robot Framework is its ease of use from the user’s point of view. No programming knowledge is required to use the tool, which uses a keyword-based structure to describe tests. Many testers find the tool easy to use.

Because of its ease of use, the Robot Framework offers a very good alternative as a test automation tool. As an open-source product, its trial threshold is also much lower than commercial products from an organizational point of view.

In recent years, the use of Robot Framework has also increased in software robotics (RPA). The ease of deployment and powerful extensibility provided by open source is also a trump card in software robotics. The keyword-based approach of the Robot Framework also works well in software robotics.
